Here are a list of common recognised runes and some descriptions (a complete illustrated list can found here)
- Voyance - A basic yet permanent rune. It is usually the first received at a young age, placed on the back of the dominant hand it aims to expand the wearers sight so they can immediately recognise things such as downworlders and glamours.
- Agility - Equips Nephilim with acuity of the body AND mind. All receive this rune early in their training.
- Enkeli - All Nephilim receive this mark as it represents their angelic bonds.
- Equilibrium - A permanent rune often placed on the limbs of the body. It gives the shadowhunter increased balance which becomes useful in close combat.
- Fearless - Makes the user afraid of nothing.
- Fortitude - Provides the worrier with unshakable resolve and inner strength.
- Heightened speed - This fades over time. It allows the wearer to move at an increased speed when required.
- Mendelin - It creates a brief glamour over the wearer so one can seem invisible for a short period of time. The rune fades quickly.
- Nyx - Allows for the user to see in the dark.
- Precision - Gives the Nephilim the ability to perform to a high degree of precision such as aim or ability to repeat tasks exactly.
- Soundless - Fades very quickly but allows the user to move about in silence.

Special Runes (These should not be taken lightly as they are for life):
- Friendship/Combine - This is the parabatai rune. It allows the two connected Nephilim to have a bond between them where they can use each others strength
- Wedded Union - Placed on the back of the hand, it is permanent and symbolises the matrimony of man and wife.
